Canoe Club Trips - General Information
Up to date information concerning all trips and social events will now be displayed on the message board which can be located through the link on the Whats On page
About 5 times a year the Canoe Club runs Trips around the country, departing on a Friday evening and returning on a Sunday evening. For this academic year (subject to change if unsuitable conditions arise) we planned to run:
1 - A freshers Trip to Yorkshire, camping along side a short strech of relatively easy water suitable as an introduction to white water for beginners, with a slightly harder river for second day to challenge better paddlers.
2 - Attend the Tyne Tour in Northumberland, an event run by the sports governing body which attracts many university clubs and other paddlers, around 2000 in total to camp on the riverbank and paddle the river Tyne, before again leaving to find another river for the second day.
3 - A trip to Cornwall, along with the surf, sailing and other watersports clubs from the university to do some canoe surfing.
4 - An advanced paddling trip to Scotland for 4/5 days during the Easter break to experience the thrill of technical paddling for the more experienced paddler
5 - A relaxing trip to North Wales, camping on the beach on Hells Mouth Bay, with a BBQ and a camp fire with a little bit of paddling thrown in as well
6 - Finally a trip over the channel for two weeks or more to paddle the best white water that Europe has to offer

New to the Club and keen to go on a trip?
For those of you who are new to canoeing or even just new to the club, there are a few things you should know.
It is important that we as a club provide you with the right equipment and that you know how to use it. But it is just as important that you look after yourself while on such trips. We will tell you how:
|
You are advised to take the right kind of clothing for both on and off the water.
Firstly for on the water, you will get wet! A thermal top like above (or more than one if you have more) will aid keeping you warm when you are wet. Cotton T-shirts are a big no no, they are not advisable. Any polyester or man made fibre top will be much warmer. However don't wear big thick fleeces, as they hold water and make you very heavy and can make swimming in them harder.
On top of your thermals you will need a Cagoule. The club owns a few specialised cagoules of various quality, but any kind of cheap waterproof cagoule will help keep you warm.

It would be advisable that you get hold of a wetsuit, preferable with long legs as the club only has a very limited number. This are absolutely ideal for learning to paddle white water as you will end up out of your boat. They offer warmth and protection from bumping into rocks. |
Whilst on the water it is also important you wear something on your feet, old trainers, Teva sandals or similar. Alternatively wetsuit socks or boots are better for keeping your toes warm and are pretty cheap if you are going to stick with the sport.
Finally, what ever you do, never wear denim or shellsuit type fabrics whilst on the water!

And for when you are off the water....
The majority of the time when we go away on a trip we will be camping. Obviously this can be a little chilly when it is not sunny so bring sensible clothing. |
Depending on weather conditions the campsites may wet and muddy, so either take some hiking boots or some trainers that you don't mind getting mucky.
Waterproofs are a good idea too, if we are walking to the pub and its raining, it won't stop us! A jacket or even waterproof trousers will stop you looking like a drowned rat!
A good warm hat will do wonders if you are cold too!
Obviosly your clothing should reflect the conditions in the area and prior to any trip, the leaders will tell everyone who it taking part what it is likely to be like, but if you are sensible you should keep an eye on the weather forcast and if it says rain for where we are going, don't pack the bikinis girls!
